L1 Pharmacy Technician - Central | Pharmacy

This position is responsible for performing technical and clerical duties within the inpatient pharmacy distribution system. These duties are associated with providing comprehensive pharmaceutical services to patients of UF Health. Tasks include coordination of pharmacy repackaging and compounding; central pharmacy inventory management, including medications and supplies; medication preparation and distribution to patient care areas and automated dispensing cabinets; and regulatory compliance and other tasks necessary to support safe medication distribution. Competencies required for pharmacy technician level 1 must be completed and successfully assessed within six months of start date and at annual evaluations thereafter.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience & Training:

• At least one of the following qualifications is preferred:
  • One year of hospital or community pharmacy experience.
  • Experience with non-sterile compounding and USP 795 requirements.
  • Experience with medication repackaging.
  • Inventory management skills, including experience with automation (carousels and automated dispensing cabinets).
  • Completion of military hospital core school and/or field medical service school.
  • One year (24 credit hours) of college-level study, which must include successful completion of algebra, chemistry and biology.

Job Knowledge & Characteristics:

• Successful completion of all competencies required for the pharmacy technician level 1 position, including all new hire competencies. Successful completion of departmental competencies defined as a score of at least 85%.
• Demonstrate ability to lift 30+ pounds.
• Demonstrate ability to operate calculator, telecommunication and computer workstations.
• Demonstrate ability to properly utilize compounding and laboratory equipment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of medications including brand and generic names.
• Maintain baseline math competency and perform necessary calculations to accurately prepare medication doses.
• Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with state and federal laws, rules and regulatory standards.
• Foster customer-oriented and hospitable environment. Facilitate communication within and across departments.
• Demonstrate safety, accuracy and timeliness when completing work.
• Demonstrate ability to triage work appropriately.
• Once competency is established, demonstrate ability to train others.

Additional Requirement:

• As a condition of employment within the Pharmacy Services Department of Shands Hospital, all employees must be accessible by telephone. This requires each employee to provide and maintain a valid telephone number to the department staff assistant in order for the department to reach them in the event of hospital need and/or emergency.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

• All pharmacy technicians must be registered with the Florida Board of Pharmacy as a registered pharmacy technician or licensed pharmacist intern prior to their first day of employment.
