L1 Pharmacy Technician - Decentral | Pharmacy

Responsible for performing the technical and clerical duties that do not require professional judgment in the inpatient pharmacy distribution system. These duties are associated with providing comprehensive pharmaceutical services to inpatients of Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Competencies required for pharmacy technician level 1 must be complete and successfully assessed within six months of start date and at annual evaluation thereafter.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education, Experience and Training:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• One of the following requirements must be met for minimum training or minimum experience in lieu of training:
  • Six months of Shands pharmacy technician level 1 experience and completion of all required competencies.
  • Completion of Shands Hospital technician training program.
  • Current enrollment in the Shands Hospital pharmacy technician training program with the consent of the program director.
  • Completion of military hospital core school and/or completion of field service school.
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program.
  • Completion of a college-based pharmacy technician training program.
  • One year of hospital pharmacy technician experience.
  • One year of retail pharmacy technician experience.
  • One year of pharmaceutical inventory function experience, including proper ordering from approved vendors to ensure adequate inventory based upon demand and maintenance of a pharmacy inventory.
  • One year (24-credit hours) of science-based college-level study which must include successful completion of algebra.
  • One year of experience transcribing/interpreting physician orders, plus 12-credit hours of science-based college-level study which must include successful completion of algebra.
  • Active status as a certified pharmacy technician with PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board).
• Candidates presenting with multiple qualifications defined in section 2 are preferred.
• Knowledge of aseptic technique, Laminar Air Flow Hood experience and knowledge of repackaging and compounding techniques preferred.

Job Knowledge:

• Must know how to operate typewriter, calculator and computer workstation.
• Must demonstrate the ability to perform mathematical calculations required to prepare medications.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

• All pharmacy technicians must be registered with the Florida Board of Pharmacy as a registered pharmacy technician or licensed pharmacist intern prior to their first day of employment.

Additional Requirement:

• "As a condition of employment within the Pharmacy Services Department of Shands Hospital, all employees must be accessible by telephone. This requires each employee to provide a valid telephone number to the department staff assistant in order for the department to reach them in the event of hospital need and/or emergency."
